In the Name of Althea
Last night, the US Open paid tribute to an American hero. Althea Gibson’s life was a testament to living the American Dream. The daughter of sharecroppers, she grew up in a welfare home and went on to win 11 Grand Slam events. Ms. Gibson broke down barriers and blazed a path for blacks and women in tennis. Her struggle and victories made it easier for Arthur Ashe, Billy Jean King, Venus and Serena Williams to follow in her footsteps.

As the video reflects, generations of Americans have already forgotten Ms. Gibson’s contributions and impact on the game. The filmmakers and Bud Collins got it right – Althea Gibson deserves a court and/or award named in her honor. Contact the USTA and WTA and encourage them to do the right thing, in the name of Althea.
